This course familiarizes students with the breadth of genres within documentary film. Dating back to Robert Flaherty's 1922 Nanook of the North, the course traces social, observational, hybrid, archive, essay, and music documentaries including those by Fredrick Wiseman, Sara Gómez, Werner Herzog, Chris Marker, and Laura Poitras. We analyze the aesthetic and formal elements of these films as well as the ethics of how they were made and distributed.
