The course offers students the opportunity to learn techniques to obtain data, analyze it, identify newsworthy findings, and communicate key statistics to broad audiences through writing, charts, and maps. The course also gives students an introduction to programming in R and different software programs for analyzing data and data visualization. Students receive an introduction to key statistics and explore some of the ethical issues journalists confront when working with data. The course focuses on using data for journalism, but also is of value to students considering careers in business and other fields where they will need to work with data.
