The course provides a close and guided reading through Marcel Proust's monumental novel, In Search of Lost Time, while considering important contributions on the work by critics and theorists, including Henri Bergson, Sigmund Freud, Walter Benjamin, Robert Musil, Paul Ricoeur, and Gérard Genette. In addition to learning techniques in close reading, students are introduced to the intellectual and cultural history generated by Proust's innovative project. No training in French or German is required, though the texts are made available in the original languages.
