Medical Microbiology

Dr. Nikolaus Jilg, MD, PhD, is an Assistant in Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School. Jilg is board certified in internal nedicine (both in Germany and the US) and in infectious diseases (US). He received his medical degree and doctoral degree from the Technische Universität München in Munich, Germany, and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Freiburg, Germany. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship on interferon signal transduction and hepatitis C in hepatology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Jilg went on to undergo clinical training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and in infectious diseases at the combined Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women's Hospital fellowship program, which he completed in 2018. Since 2017, he conducts basic and clinical research in the fields of HIV and COVID-19. He is fluent in both English and German. Jilg's research interests include resistance of HIV to novel therapies and clinical trials in COVID-19 and HIV. He has published his research in numerous articles in the peer-reviewed literature. He provides clinical care to inpatients and outpatients in the Infectious Diseases Division at Massachusetts General Hospital. Jilg has taught a microbiology course at the Harvard Extension school for several years. He is dedicated to educating the next generation of medical doctors, internists, and infectious disease specialists, taking care of patients with a wide variety of infections and advancing the field through his research.

Dr. Sarah Osmulski is an anesthesiologist who completed her undergraduate education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), medical education at Harvard University, and anesthesiology residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School. She engages in research in multidrug resistant Gram negative bacteria, specifically Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia contaminans, investigating mechanisms of antibiotic and antiseptic resistance. She has been involved in the medical microbiology course with Harvard Extension School since 2020.
