Leading and Managing Nonprofit Organizations

Professor Patricia H. Deyton is an experienced educator in the areas of nonprofit management, general management, gender and leadership, negotiations, and change management. As a professor at the School of Business at Simmons University, she also served as the associate dean of the School of Management and the program director for the MBA and the healthcare MBA programs. She was the director of the Center for Gender in Organizations for 12 years, the internationally recognized research center at Simmons addressing gender, diversity, and organizational effectiveness. Deyton has taught at the Harvard Extension School for over 10 years. Deyton is the senior advisor to the Council of Women World Leaders. She is formerly the chief executive officer of the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay. She has led numerous research and practice projects including creating and consulting with the African Universities Gender Resource Network, Oxfam America, and the Japanese Women's Leadership Initiative. She has traveled extensively to Japan and 35 other counties around the world. Her research interests and publications focus on women and leadership, barriers to the advancement of women, and the roles of women in nonprofit organizations. She has consulted and spoken widely in the areas of nonprofit management and gender dynamics and leaders. Deyton has served on numerous nonprofit boards of directors and public commissions. Deyton has a master's of social work from Columbia University, a master's of divinity from Yale University, certificates in management from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University and the Harvard Kennedy School, and a certificate in ethics from the Darden School at the University of Virginia. She is currently President of the Board of Directors of the Red Lily Pond Project Association, a member and vice-chair of the Nonprofit Board Committee of The Boston Club, and Secretary and Executive Committee member of the Town of Barnstable Democratic Committee.
