Today's workplaces in the United States can include as many as five different generations. The collective experiences that are shared across each generation shape the values, norms, and social mores of the individuals within them. Sometimes the negative elements of these generational differences get highlighted as we hear about the conflicts and judgement between certain age-based cohorts. However, we can enhance our workplaces and the work we do by instead drawing on the different strengths of these generations. Topics covered include ageism and reverse ageism, unconscious bias, managing intergenerational conflict, communication modes in the workplace, and remote/hybrid and in-person work. These challenges do not come with a clear-cut manual to resolve them, but we can take steps to understanding what each generation contributes and needs in order to better determine how we can create a more productive and collaborative multigenerational workplace.
