This course is designed to help students understand the nature and determinants of international mobility of capital and the globalization of the financial industry. We analyze the role of financial institutions in allocating resources, managing risk, and exerting corporate governance over firms. We explore the regulation of financial intermediaries, the economic rationale for and against regulation, and the political forces shaping policy decisions. Examples from countries with different legal, political, and regulatory regimes provide a richer understanding of the role of financial institutions. Finally, using economic principles, we examine the impact of financial system on inequality, economic growth, and financial crises.
