Human Pathophysiology I

Dr. Nancy Long Sieber is an adjunct lecturer at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. She received her BA with honors in biology from Oberlin College, and holds a PhD in physiology from the University of Michigan. Her PhD thesis was focused on studying the mechanisms of fever and stress hyperthermia. After spending a year as a postdoctoral fellow in Japan, she began her work at the Chan School in 1991, where she has been doing research and teaching ever since. Sieber is broadly interested in environmental health, particularly its impact on vulnerable populations. Her experiences include studies on the effect of exposure to various forms of air pollution and on the health effects of metals in the environment. Her current work is focused on environmental health issues in India, especially the impact of air pollution. Sieber has been teaching at the Harvard Extension School since 1999. She also teaches human physiology and human pathophysiology in the Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Dr. Adel El Boueiz is a pulmonology and critical care physician-scientist in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and the Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He earned his MD from the Lebanese University, completed residency at the American University of Beirut and Johns Hopkins Hospital, fellowship at Harvard-affiliated hospitals, and holds a master’s in biomedical informatics from HMS. His National Institutes of Health (NIH)- and Alpha-1 Foundation-funded research focuses on identifying genetic contributors to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH), applying machine learning to define disease heterogeneity and developing omics-based prediction tools. His work has been published in leading journals and presented at national and international conferences. Clinically, El Boueiz manages complex respiratory conditions including COPD, PH, tracheomalacia, post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, and unexplained dyspnea. He provides care in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including the ICU, long-term acute care, and specialty clinics. A dedicated educator, he leads procedural workshops, teaches at Harvard and national American Thoracic Society (ATS) programs, and mentors trainees through lectures, curriculum development, and board exam preparation. He is also active in community outreach, delivering pulmonary education and services to underserved populations. His contributions to clinical care, research, and education have earned multiple honors, including the Johns Hopkins Outstanding Teacher and Role Model Award and the BWH Department of Medicine Chair's Research Award.
