The History of Law in Europe

Tamar Herzog has both a law degree and a PhD in history. After practicing law for several years, she returned to Harvard University as Professor of Legal and Colonial History. Before Harvard, she was a professor at the University of Chicago and Stanford. Her work engages with both European and colonial law. She is the author of seven books and three edited volumes, as well as over one hundred articles and book chapters published in fifteen different countries. Her most recent books include A Short History of European Law: The Last Two and a Half Millennia (2018, translations in Spanish, Mandarin, Italian, Portuguese, and Korean), Frontiers of Possession: Spain and Portugal in Europe and the Americas (2015, translations in Spanish and Portuguese), Upholding Justice: State, Law and the Penal System (2004, translations in French and Spanish), and Defining Nations: Immigrants and Citizens in Early Modern Spain and Spanish America (2003, translations in Spanish and French). The winner of several book and teaching awards, and multiple prestigious fellowships (among others, Guggenheim and Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton), her work engages with the right to land, border conflicts, citizenship and immigration, social and legal classifications, and comparative law.
