Sustainable Ocean Environments

A biologist by training, George Buckley has spent his career in environmental management administration, consulting,education, and film making. After working on numerous regional environmental projects and serving as a Director of Science in Watertown, Massachusetts, he co-founded and served as Assistant Director of the Sustainability and Environmental Management programs with Jack Spengler at the Harvard Extension School, where he retired after coordinating over 200 master's degree candidates. Actively involved in appointed, elected, and volunteer education and environmental advocacy, he continues to serve on numerous boards of directors including the New England Aquarium, Boston Malacological, and the Boston Sea Rovers. A leader in promoting citizen science, he has led over a dozen Earthwatch expeditions, serves on the Massachusetts Envirothon council, and led numerous field programs from Cape Cod, to the Florida Keys, and to Bonaire in the Netherlands Antilles. His field work has focused on horseshoe crabs, coral reefs, bay ecology, Teredos, land snails, and coastal habitat management. Amongst many awards that he has received are the Environmental Protection Agency's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Beneath the Sea Diver of the Year Award, the Bonaire's Golden Flamingo and Ambassador Awards, the Harvard Extension School's Shattuck Prize for Excellence in Teaching, and the National Kidney Foundation's Living Donor Award.
