This fourth-year advanced-level Russian language course emphasizes viewing and listening, reading, analysis, and discussion of authentic Russian materials from media, social media, and popular culture to better understand their impact on Russian society. Through working with documentaries, popular YouTube and Telegram channels, television shows, video games, graphic novels, and memes, students explore everyday life and attitudes in Russia from the early days of the Russian Federation to the present day (1991-2024).

Prerequisites

Three years (six semesters total) of Russian at a university level or the equivalent (education, study abroad or domestic immersion experience, and/or job experience).

Notes

This course meets via web conference. Students must attend and participate at the scheduled meeting time. Open to admitted Secondary School Program students by petition. Harvard College students: This course is eligible for degree credit, but see important policy information.
