Do you write poems? Do you read them? Do you want to do those things? If so, this course is for you. In this course, students write, with help, and we read, together, as a workshop, the poems students want to write: they can try out very old forms (sonnets and ghazals) and brand-new ones (the duplex or the Golden Shovel) as well as working from other kinds of starting points and responding to other works of art, from paintings to pop songs. Students receive peer feedback on their work, not only the teacher's (though they get plenty of that), and they become better readers of other people's work. Students who have taken poetry classes and workshops before are welcome in this one; and if they have not, they are welcome too. We also read—and meet, perhaps in person—modern and contemporary poets too, writers who can be models for your own work.
