Engaging in the Scholarly Conversation I

At the Harvard Extension School, Stephen Shoemaker serves as director of liberal arts, the research advisor in the humanities in the ALM program, and as a lecturer in the study of religion. He holds a PhD, AM, and ThM from Harvard, and an MDiv from Princeton. He teaches primarily in American religion, and his research focuses on the history of religion within American higher education. He is currently working on a book that traces the developments in religion at nineteenth-century Harvard.

Dr. Elise Ciregna is a historian specializing in social, visual, and material culture. She has an ALM from the Harvard Extension School in the history of art and architecture, and a doctorate in history from the University of Delaware. Ciregna has worked as a historic cemetery curator and director; has been editor of a scholarly journal on gravestones and cemeteries; has taught courses at the University of Delaware, the Wentworth Institute, and Harvard Extension School; has lectured at Brown University; and has led workshops at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. Currently, she is an administrator in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University.
