Engaging in the Scholarly Conversation

Dr. Michael Miner is a Lecturer in Extension and longtime member of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He has taught at Harvard for over a decade, including courses on intelligence, strategy, and national security. Miner manages the Intelligence Project in the Belfer Center, where his research portfolio examines organizational processes and reform in addition to the role of intelligence in policymaking. He has authored dozens of innovative national security case studies routinely taught in flagship graduate courses, seminars, and leadership development programs designed for fellows, students, and school visitors. Miner earned his PhD at King's College London studying with the Official Historian of the British Joint Intelligence Committee. Beyond teaching, he served on the Fulbright Specialist Roster supported by the US Department of State and volunteered in the United States Marine Corps Cyber Auxiliary. Miner was twice elected president of the Fulbright Association in Massachusetts, served as Treasurer for the Society for Intelligence History, and is a graduate of Dartmouth College.

Doug Bond received a bachelor of science degree in technical communications from the University of Minnesota, as well as a master's degree in international communications and a doctorate in political science from the University of Hawaii. Upon completion of his PhD in 1985, he was a research fellow and held an assistant professorship at Kyungnam University in South Korea for three years. He moved to Harvard University's Center for International Affairs in 1988, where he led the development of PANDA (Protocol for the Assessment of Nonviolent Direct Action), which is used with news reports to identify, track, and analyze the evolution of political conflict. Bond founded Virtual Research Associates (VRA) in 1996 to design and build automated tools to advance his research. He has taught continuously at Harvard Extension School since 1994 and since 2014 has worked as a research advisor in international relations.
