This course examines the scientific, technological, and commercial foundations underlying emerging therapeutic modalities that are transforming modern biotechnology. Students explore major classes of therapeutics, including protein biologics, cell and gene therapies, and RNA-based medicines through a unified framework encompassing mechanism of action, molecular design, delivery systems, clinical translation, and real-world constraints. Using case-based learning, the course traces how innovative technologies emerge from academia or industry, progress through development, and ultimately reach patients. Emphasis is placed on understanding how delivery, manufacturability, and scalability determine the success or failure of therapeutic platforms. Students analyze real-world biotechnology companies, compare therapeutic modalities, and develop the ability to critically assess emerging technologies. By the end of the course, students apply a structured framework to evaluate and design novel therapeutic approaches grounded in scientific feasibility and unmet medical need.
