This is an intensive introductory course designed for students with little or no previous knowledge of Spanish. In this course, students interact with instructors, peers, and native Spanish speakers around the world as we explore the culturally and linguistically rich content included in our three units: personal representations (my community and I), local representations (exploring Boston), and national representations (Spanish in the USA). While learning and discussing course content, students are able to develop and enhance their linguistic and cultural knowledge of Spanish and the Spanish-speaking world by exploring a wide array of authentic texts (written, audiovisual, and visual) from many different sources, including social media, art, literature, and music. These texts are presented in ways that help students interact with them in all modes of communication (interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational), familiarizing them with and deepening their understanding of the cultures and worldviews of some Spanish-speaking communities in the United States, Latin America, and Spain. Note: this course is the equivalent of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences course Spanish 10.
