Begin Registration
This is the first course in the beginning Portuguese sequence for students with a strong background in Spanish who intend to establish a solid foundation in Portuguese. This course offers the linguistic and cultural structures necessary for basic communication in Portuguese, with emphasis on the features of Portuguese that are most challenging for Spanish speakers: pronunciation, idioms, and grammatical structures peculiar to Brazilian Portuguese. Over the course of the semester, students learn to express themselves effectively in Portuguese. Students are exposed to contextualized Luso-Afro-Brazilian culture through music, film, literature, and social media. By the end of the semester, students have developed linguistic and cultural competence sufficient to expresses themselves, participate in conversations on familiar topics, and handle short social interactions in Portuguese. This course is conducted entirely in Portuguese.
