The Connected Museum: Strategic Marketing and Audience Development
Harvard Extension School
MUSE E-127
Section 1
CRN 17549
Museums are essential public institutions, but their impact is limited if no one walks through the doors. Too often, museums fall into the build it, and they will come trap, resulting in empty galleries, zombie websites, and missed connections. This course positions marketing and communications as a vital nexus within the museum, where the institution's mission meets audience needs. Designed specifically for small to mid-sized institutions, this course provides a roadmap for building high-impact campaigns without a massive advertising budget or an outside agency. Students gain experience in the core pillars of modern museum promotion: institutional auditing, strategic branding, and multi-channel digital engagement (web, social, and email). Students leave this course with a professional, employer-ready digital portfolio that demonstrates the tactical skills needed to turn static galleries into vibrant, sustainable community hubs.
