View Course Details
This course prepares secondary mathematics teachers to design and implement equitable, responsive remediation and intervention in their own classrooms. Participants examine root causes of mathematics learning challenges and analyze gaps between instructional intent, implementation, and impact. Drawing on case studies from math classroom contexts and aligned with current standards and frameworks in mathematics education, the course emphasizes research-based practices that disrupt deficit views of mathematical ability and expand access to rigorous learning. Through self-reflection, collaborative inquiry, and problem-solving, participants deepen their mathematical knowledge for teaching and strengthen their capacity to notice, interpret, and respond to student thinking in real time. Emphasis is placed on just-in-time intervention, in-the-moment remediation, and instructional strategies that leverage multiple representations, complex reasoning, and students' identities and lived experiences. By the end of the course, participants are prepared to enact and sustain classroom practices that advance more equitable mathematics outcomes for all students.

Notes

This course meets via web conference. Students must attend and participate at the scheduled meeting time. See minimum technology requirements. Along with the web-conference meetings, this course also includes an intensive—and mandatory—on-campus residency. Students must be present for the entire on-campus session to earn credit for the course. The course begins via web conference during the first week of the term and continues to meet throughout the term. Please see the syllabus for the specific course meeting dates. Tuition does not include hotel accommodations, transportation, or meals for the on-campus session. International students see important visa information. Students in this course may interact with students at Harvard College, for example, in Canvas or class sessions. Accordingly, when students participate in live class sessions, they may do so alongside students in those courses. If students participate in a way that causes them to appear in recordings of the class, those recordings may be shown to students enrolled in the other courses.
