This course is intended to provide a thorough introduction to the poetry of Archaic Greek lyric. Readings cover the major Archaic Greek lyric poets, from Archilochus through Bacchylides and Pindar. Over the course of the semester, students become proficient in reading the different genres and dialects of Ancient Greek lyric and gain an understanding of its history, culture, performance context, meters, and dialect and linguistic background.
