View Course Details
This section of JOUR E-140a focuses on local news. In these days of news deserts and newspaper downsizing, there is a large, and growing, number of stand-alone online and print local news outlets that are hiring reporters and editors. These are professional jobs at hundreds of new news outlets around the country. In the Boston, Massachusetts area alone, several dozen new local news outlets have emerged, including The Belmont Voice, The Marblehead Weekly News, The Concord Bridge, and Brookline.news. In this course, students learn how to cover local news and how to write news and feature stories relevant to the towns they live in or are covering. They also produce audio and video pieces on local topics and develop a portfolio of news clips and multimedia content that they can include in their resumes or publish.
