This course examines the leadership, operational, and curatorial frameworks that define forward-thinking museums and cultural centers. Through seminars, case studies, workshops, and applied projects, students explore innovative approaches that sustain institutional vitality, public engagement, and curatorial excellence. The course integrates strategic, executive, and artistic perspectives with creative practice, addressing contracts and agreements, insurance and liability, budgeting, and leadership methodologies. Students analyze, synthesize, and develop curatorial and audience development strategies that expand participation, diversify engagement, and align programming with contemporary cultural contexts. A central component is the concept of beyond the building, which challenges students to reimagine how institutions extend their reach and deepen relevance through new platforms and collaborations. Emphasis is placed on accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainability as core principles of contemporary practice. Throughout the course, students participate in in-person workshops, site visits, and discussions with industry leaders, gaining first-hand insight into museum and cultural center operations, curatorial practice, and audience engagement. On-campus and local field experiences at Harvard institutions and in the Greater Boston area provide opportunities for applied learning and collaboration with cultural organizations. By the end of the course, students refine comprehensive management and curatorial competencies that prepare them to lead with creativity, accountability, and vision in the global cultural sector.
