Operational Technology Security Fundamentals
Harvard Summer School

Section 1

Operational technology (OT) is crucial because it encompasses the hardware and software systems that monitor and control physical devices, processes, and infrastructure. These systems are vital for the functioning of critical infrastructure such as power plants, water treatment facilities, transportation systems, and manufacturing plants. Unlike traditional information technology (IT), which focuses on data processing and communication, OT is concerned with the direct control and monitoring of physical operations. This comprehensive course is designed to provide participants with a solid foundation in OT cybersecurity. Throughout the course, students gain an understanding of the key concepts, risks, and advanced tools necessary for securing OT environments. The course is structured into three weeks, each focusing on different aspects of OT cybersecurity.
