This course is an introduction to financial accounting, its concepts, and the techniques of recording, summarizing, and reporting the flow of financial information through the entity concerned. The course offers an understanding of the information flow process and the necessary techniques for analysis and evaluation of a firm's potential in light of historical data. Students may not take both ECON S-1900 and MGMT S-1000 for Harvard Extension School degree or certificate.

Lloyd Tanlu is the Ehrick Kilner Haight Sr. Term Associate Professor of Accounting at the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics at Washington and Lee University. He has taught accounting courses (including intermediate accounting, managerial and cost accounting, and financial statement analysis) across the undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels at various universities, including Northeastern University, the University of Washington, the University of Michigan, and Harvard University. He has received numerous awards for research, teaching, and service. He received his doctorate in accounting from Harvard Business School, an MS in international economics and finance from Brandeis University, and undergraduate degrees in management and psychology at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. Tanlu does research on various issues in managerial accounting, including budgeting and forecasting, management control systems, incentives, corporate governance, and performance measurement and evaluation. His work has been published in various academic journals including The Accounting Review, Academy of Management Review, and Review of Accounting Studies. Before becoming a full-time academic, he was the assistant director for budget and planning at Brandeis University and a finance and accounting manager at Procter and Gamble Philippines.
