In this course, students learn how to identify and research stories that make compelling features, develop narrative concepts, and plan effective reporting trips. They practice finding and approaching memorable characters and conducting in-depth, insightful interviewsmdash;whether everyday people, politicians or subject-matter experts.
Through workshops and peer feedback, students learn to structure engaging narratives, distill essential information from research and interviews, and bring scenes and characters to life. Readings and class discussions highlight innovative and exemplary feature writing, while guest speakersmdash;accomplished writers and editorsmdash;share insights into their craft and the process behind producing award-winning work. The course also explores practical strategies for publication, including how to communicate effectively with editors and craft pitches that stand out in a competitive media landscape. Recognizing that today's feature writers are often expected to help promote their work, students also participate in a workshop on creating a short, professional-quality social media video designed to showcase and promote their own stories.
